Obituary of Mary Bosseler

Mary Alice Bosseler, age 84, of Painted Post, NY passed away on Wednesday November 21, 2018 at Strong Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on May 9, 1934 in Rochester, NY the daughter of the late Dr. Howard and Elizabeth (Waterman) Ritchlin. In 1958 she married George E. Bosseler in Batavia, NY.

Mary Alice received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Michigan State University, Masters in Education from Elmira College and post-graduate studies at Stanford University. She retired in 1991 from Corning Painted-Post School District where she taught English to students’ grades 7-12 for almost 20 years. She was the first to implement an Advanced Placement English course in the district and received the Teacher of Excellence Award by the NYS English Council. In the early 1980s, her passion for higher education inspired her to write a SAT workbook, Skills for Attacking Tests, to help her students prepare for the verbal SAT. She coached dozens of National Merit Finalists and even more Commended students. In her spare time, she assisted students with their college applications and essays. In retirement, she continued to share her love of education by teaching the art of poetry to at-risk children in Florida.

Mary Alice was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Vero Beach, FL and summers at Keuka Lake where she passed on her love of culture, nature and swimming. For years, she loved singing in the Holy Cross Catholic Church Choir in Florida. She was extremely proud of her Irish Ritchlin heritage, and loved spending time with her extended family. Mary Alice treasured her MSU Kappa Alpha Theta sorority sisters and remained an active member throughout her life. Her positive, energetic personality lifted the spirits of all who knew and loved her. Mary Alice’s heart was in everything she did, always wanting to make a difference in people’s lives.

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, George, daughters Elizabeth (Kenneth) Makoid of Malvern, Pa, Kimberly (Gregory) Miller of Battle Creek, MI, and Georgia (Christopher) Rossi of Pittsburgh, and seven grandchildren Kayleigh and Greg Makoid, Julia, Margo and Anna Miller and Christopher and Victor Rossi. She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. Howard William Ritchlin.

Family and friends are invited to Phillips Funeral Home, 17 West Pulteney Street, on Friday, November 30th from 6:00-8:00 pm. Mary Alice's Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mary Church, 155 State Street, Corning, NY on Saturday, December 1st at 10:00 am.
