Obituary of Vincent Chapman

Vincent Orlo Chapman, 80, of Painted Post, left this world on November 17, 2018. Born September 8,1938 in Avoca to George B. Chapman and Helen L. Thomas Chapman, Vincent was accepted into the U.S. Air Cadets upon graduating at the top of his class in 1957. He chose instead to  marry his soulmate, Deanna I. Stryker, on March 28, 1959 in Bath, a decision he never regretted. He was a loving and devoted husband to Deanna for 59 years who predeceased him on May 19th of this year. They were both the proud parents of Kelly, Vincent (wife Wendi), and Jackie (husband David); grandparents of Nathan, Logan, Carisa, Sydnie, and Chase; and great-grandparents of Emma.

Vincent was loved, respected and cherished by all who knew and met him, known for his kindness and soft-spoken nature. He was a true partner in marriage, a hands-on father, and engaged grandfather who also often took others under his wing to mentor and pass on his skills and experience. He retired from Corning, Inc. after 38 years of dedicated service where he made lifelong friendships. He was often recognized within the former Corning Glass Works for designs, innovations and improvements that were integrated into company practices.

Vincent was a skilled carpenter and mason, tackling many large projects and home improvements through the years with Deanna by his side, most notably extensive renovations following the local flood of 1972. He was an avid sportsman, hunter, and fisherman, the art and love of which he passed down to his children and grandchildren.

Vincent was a dedicated husband and father whose commitment to family was unwavering as he invested countless hours in their happiness and well-being. He found goodness in everyone around him and his generosity will live on through countless persons who benefitted from his goodwill. He was a shining example for all to emulate.

Family and friends are invited to gather and say farewell beginning at 11:00 am on Friday, December 7 at Phillips Funeral Home at 17 W. Pulteney St. in Corning followed by a memorial service at 1:00 pm, officiated by Rev. Troy Preston. All are encouraged to view and contribute to Vincent’s memorial online at phillipsfuneralhome.com with remembrances and photos. Donations can be made in Vincent’s name to The American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association, and CareFirst Hospice.
