Obituary of Richard Rooman
Richard Eric Rooman, age 92, of Horseheads, NY passed peacefully from this life into the presence of his Friend and Savior, Jesus, on Friday, September 15, 2017. Richard was born November 6, 1924 in North Easton, MA to George Waldemar and Alfhild (Wilhelmsen) Rooman. He married Doris Claire Pederson on March 28, 1942 at Elton, MD. Richard loved and served our country with honor during WWII in the Army Air Corps flying in the B29 Bombers. He flew 23 missions after being wounded, receiving the Purple Heart, Conspicuous Service Cross, and many other awards and honors.
Professionally, Richard was an artist and worked as an illustrator and art director in New York City for several companies including McGraw-Hill Publishing and 21st Century Communications. He was the art director for Gourmet Magazine and illustrated the book "How Does It Work?". Besides commercial art, Richard loved to paint and blessed many with his talent.
After retirement, Richard moved with Doris from their Long Island home to Wellsboro, PA where he became active in their church community and pursued his love of hunting, gardening, and, of course, painting.
Above everything he loved to tell people about Jesus.
He is survived by three sons and a daughter, and their spouses: Richard Edward and Gillian (Thornby) of Horseheads; Curtis of Smithtown, NY; Wayne and Karen (Kopher) of Topeka, Kansas; and Jeanne (Rooman) and Dr. John Schiavone of Horseheads, with whom he resided since 2003. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his wife of 74 years, Doris, his dear son, Roger Rooman, and Roger's son, Michael Gustav Rooman.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Joseph's Skilled Nursing Facility and Dr. Joseph Calderone for their loving care and respect for Richard. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Bridge (formally Big Flats Wesleyan Church).
Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, September 18, 2017 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the Bridge, 561 Maple St., Big Flats, NY. A memorial service will immediately follow at 6:00pm. Burial will take place Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 10:00am in the family plot at Fairview Cemetery, Middlebury Center, PA.
