Obituary of Janet Gridley
Janet “Pat” Lorraine Gridley, 91, passed away on August 31, 2017 at the Steuben Center in Bath, NY.
Janet was born July 27th, 1926 in Corning, NY to George & Gladys (Lee) Hunt. She graduated from Northside High School in 1944 and worked at Corning Natural Gas for 32 years. She married a “spunky” US Navy sailor, Kenneth “Bud” Gridley on April 26, 1947 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Corning. They had two children; Debra Ann Kittner and William “Billy” Roy Gridley. They celebrated 51 years of marriage before “Bud” passed away in 1998. She had a second chance at love with fiancé Bernie Kittner before his passing in 2010.
Pat was an amazing, loving, fun, strong and supportive Mother, Nana & Great-Nana. She adored and dotted on her three grandchildren from the moment they were born; Garry Coon (Shelly) of Caton , NY, Matthew Coon (Cassie) of Greensboro, NC, and Leslie Stopyra (Jason) of Rural Hall, NC. In the last 16 years, she was blessed with the opportunity to create wonderful memories with her 4 great grandchildren; Levi Coon, Maddie, Mason, and Morgan Stopyra. In 1999, she lovingly welcomed two 2 more grandchildren into the family Mike Kittner (Sarah) of Clemmons, NC and Jill Nelson (Eric) of Randolph, NY. With this addition to her family she also gained 5 more great-grandchildren, Owen, Griffin, & Mya Nelson, Harper & Reagan Kittner.
Pat lived a very full and blessed life. All who met her, loved her sweet ways and admired her inner strength. Through the years she enjoyed being a part of a long running card club, the Caton Home Bureau and the Caton Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing golf with her husband and girlfriends at Indian Hills, attending events with “Bud” at the Corning Elks Club and traveling. Great memories were made during her frequent trips to the Adirondack Mountains, Lamoka Lake, Canada, Florida, Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Nascar Races, Myrtle Beach, and North Carolina. She also cherished her travel adventures with her daughter to Hawaii and San Francisco and cruises she and Bud enjoyed with their special friends Lois and Phil Crooker and Bill & Bev Timm.
She is survived by her loving daughter Debra Kittner (Terry) of Lamoka Lake, NY; sister Phyllis Newman of Jamestown, NY; 3 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 5 step great-grandchildren; 3 sister-n-laws, Awanda Hunt, Barbara Essler, Helen Louise Tobey; brother-n-law Philip Huber, 17 loving nieces and nephews, and many very special friends.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her son, William “Billy” Gridley in 1974; brothers George Hunt and Donald Hunt; sisters Jacquelyn Ripley and Sylvia Huber.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours at Philips Funeral Home at 17 West Pulteney St. Corning, NY from noon to 3pm on Tuesday September 5th. A funeral service will follow immediately afterward at 3pm officiated by Deacon Joseph Erway. Burial will be held following the funeral service in Elmwood Cemetery, Caton.
