Obituary of Larry Wilson

Larry D. Wilson, 71, of the Town of Orange, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, July 30, 2017, following a long and brave battle with congestive heart failure.

Born November 2, 1945, in Ashland, Ky., he was the son of Marvin Holt Wilson Jr. and Wilma Jean Mabry Wilson.

He married Sandie Eldred on June 19, 1981, in Painted Post.

A native of Greenup, Ky., he attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., and Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.

Wilson had a long and distinguished career in newspaper reporting and editing which began with the Journal-Herald in Dayton, Ohio, and continued in the local area. Having previously worked in The Leader newsroom in Corning, he retired from the Star-Gazette as the Corning Bureau Chief in 2008. After retiring from full-time work, Wilson continued to write the Corning Watch column for the Star-Gazette and the Rural Living column for the Dundee-Observer and Watkins Review, ending his writing career in May of this year as his health deteriorated.

Predeceased by his father, Wilson is survived by his wife, Sandie; their son, Nathan (Megan) Wilson of Troy, N.Y., his mother, Jean Wilson of Lexington, Ky.; his sister, Mary Lynn (Tony) English of Lexington, Ky.; brothers-in-law Benjamin (Mary) Eldred of Williamsport, Pa., and Kenneth Eldred of Beaver Dams, along with nephews Andrew and Adam English and Andrew and Matthew Eldred and niece, Kirsten Sizemore.

Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning on Friday, August 4, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Faith Baptist Chapel in Gang Mills at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2017 with Coleen Fabrizi and the Rev. David Ryall officiating. A private committal service for immediate family will follow at Coopers Plains Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Faith Baptist Chapel or the
