Obituary of Joseph Power

Joseph Maxwell Power age 84 went home to be with the Lord on March 5, 2017. Born on August 8, 1932 in Boston Massachusetts, he was the youngest of five children born to Robert and Johanna Power. At around the age of 8 years old, his father was tragically killed in an accident leaving his mother to raise him and his four siblings herself. Johanna Power raised her children with strong faith in God, resilience and responsibility.

On November 7, 1952, Joseph Power enlisted in the United States Air Force, and was an A1C, stationed at Wurtsmith AFB in Oscoda Michigan during the Korean War.

He met Delores Ann Davis of Corning, New York at a USO dance in Rochester, NY. They were later married on December 23, 1954.

After moving to Corning, New York he worked for Corning Glass Works, now known as Corning Inc. in the Research Department. His work in the study of

Optical Waveguides, Metal Halide Glass and Solid Tantalum Capacitors are among some of his work for Corning Inc. In 1988 he received recognition from Corning Inc.for his inventive methods and research.

Joseph Power was a devout Christian believer and a student of scriptures, and he studied Hebrew in his spare time. Among his interests and hobbies was oil painting and photography for which he won several awards in juried shows. He was also a reader and collector of books, and for several years enjoyed sailing on the lakes of New York State. Joseph and Delores celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on December 23, 2014.

He is survived by his wife Delores, son Mark Power, daughter Deirdre Power Smith, grandchildren, Lindsay D. Longwell and Ashlee N. Ashley, one great grandson, Grayson Longwell, two sisters, Mary Richard and Vickey Murrano, two nephews, Warren Power and Carl Carvallo and one niece, Pam DeLeo.

Family and friends are invited to call at Phillips Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney Street, Corning from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, Thursday, May 4, 2017.
