Obituary of Margaret Voorhees
Margaret E. Voorhees, age 100, of Painted Post, NY passed away on Monday, December 11, 2017 at her home.
Margaret was born on November 28, 1917 in Pattenburg, NJ, the daughter of the late Ralph and the late Minnie (Sittler) Leiby. She attended the University of New Jersey at Trenton, completing a two year Teacher Program. She married Kenneth R. Voorhees in 1940 in Pattenburg, NJ. He predeceased her on October 17, 2010. Margaret spent her years as a homemaker raising her son.
Margaret was a member of the United Church of Painted Post for over 20 years. During that time, she made 100 prayer shawls for the congregation. She was active in the Erwin Senior Citizens – going on many of their trips over the years. After her husband Kenneth's retirement, the two of them traveled to West Palm Beach, Florida during the winter months for 16 years. They enjoyed traveling together, visiting all of the states except two and much of Canada. When she wasn't busy traveling, Margaret will be remembered for her love of board games, sewing and needlework.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Ann (Donald) Voorhees of Corning, NY; grandchildren: Christine (Eric) Grover of Glen Rock, PA, Michael (Clara) Voorhees of Amherst, NY; great grandchildren: Ava Grover, Daniel Grover; two nieces and one nephew of, New Jersey.
In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was predeceased by sons: Donald and David Voorhees.
Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Hope Cemetery, Park Avenue, Corning, NY, Rev. Glenn Kennedy officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow the burial at the Central Restaurant in Painted Post. Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning has been entrusted with the arrangements.
