Obituary of Dorothy McLay

Dorothy E. McLay, age 84, of Corning, NY passed away on Monday, December 4, 2017 at Corning Center with her family by her side.

Dorothy was born on September 3, 1933 in Woburn, MA, the daughter of the late Robert and the late Susan E. (Wilson) Dobbins. She was a graduate and salutatorian of Woburn High School, class of 1951 and later attended the Chandler Secretarial School of Boston where she obtained her certificate in Secretarial Administration. She married William J. McLay on October 2, 1954 in Woburn, MA.

She was employed by ARMCO Steel of Boston, MA and Woburn Machine Co. of Woburn, MA before moving to Corning and beginning employment with Corning, Inc. in the personnel department at Sullivan Park. After several other places of employment and living, she later temporarily relocated with her husband to Union, NJ where she worked for DeDietrick Process Systems for a period of three years before her retirement. Additionally, Dorothy was a member of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls Massachusetts Assembly, and volunteered locally throughout her life. She was an incredibly wonderful and loyal daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, coworker, and friend. Dorothy's kind and gentle soul will live on.

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, William J. "Bill" McLay of Corning, NY; daughters: Karen (Gary) Sauteben of Lexington, KY, Leslie Velicky of Boise, ID; grandchildren: Lainey Miceli, Brooke Henard, Miles Sauteben, Lily Peel, William Maynes, Alyssa Velicky, Alexander Velicky; and four great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her daughter, Paula Maynes; and brother, Robert Dobbins.

Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, December 9, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning, NY. A memorial service will immediately follow at the funeral home at 12:00 PM, Celebrant Barb Rossi officiating.
