Sidney B. Packard, age 88, of Campbell, NY passed away on Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Bath VA Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer and dementia.
Sidney was born on March 12, 1929 in Bath, NY, the son of Eldon B. and Frances (Hall) Packard. He was a graduate of Campbell Central School, class of 1947. Sid served in the US Army and fought in the Korean War. After he returned from Korea, he married Rowena Littell on June 27, 1953. Together, they made a life in Campbell where they worked, raised their family, made a large circle of friends, and created a life to be proud of.
Sidney was a hard and dedicated worker. He learned life skills and met many friends while working with Basil Stowell/ John Deere Co. and later for the Agway Petroleum Plant of Campbell, NY. He retired from Agway after 25 years of service.
Sidney honored his father’s legacy by joining and being an active member of the EB Packard Hose Company. He was Fire Chief and Fire Commissioner for several years. Sid was proud of his part in developing the fire assistance radio system in Steuben County.
Sid was an active member of the Corning Fish & Game Club for many years. He helped establish the black powder division of the club. He was a competitive black powder shooter and was known as a crack shot. Sid made many friends at the club who will miss him greatly.
In his free time, Sidney enjoyed woodworking, photography, hunting, fishing and hiking. Sid took these interests seriously and enjoyed creating memories and trinkets for his family and friends. His family honors Dad by carrying on many of these activities and interests.
Sid loved the Adirondack Mountains. He traveled there as a child, took his family there as the children grew up, hunted and fished there with his sons and friends, and took more pictures of the mountains and streams than a photo album could hold.
Sidney had a quiet yet solid faith. He was a lifetime member of the Campbell United Methodist Church where he served as trustee, treasurer and participated in the Men’s Group. He shared his faith by offering help to anyone who needed him. Sid made friends where ever he went. His life was blessed with the old and new. Sid’s final days were spent surrounded by family, friends and the nurses he learned to love at the Bath VA.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Rowena Packard of Campbell, NY; children: Jeffrey Packard (Debra Smith) of Phoenix, NY, Brian (Lesley) Packard of Gansevoort, NY, Christine (Dewaine) Aldrich of Bath, NY, Kathryn (Lon) Schmouder of Liberty, PA; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
