Marjorie K. "Marge" Woodbury, age 89, of Corning, NY passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Corning Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare.
Marge was born on April 18, 1928 in Corning, NY, the daughter of the late Leslie D. and the late (Ruth) Agnes (Burke) Kimble. She was a graduate of Corning Free Academy, later attending Syracuse University graduating in 1950 with a degree in Journalism. While there, she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She received her Master's Degree in Education from Elmira College on June 5, 1977. She married Richard E. Woodbury on August 18, 1951 in Corning, NY. He predeceased her on January 28, 2003.
Marge worked as the assistant librarian for Corning West High School before becoming an English Teacher at Northside Blodgett, retiring in 1982. Marge was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church. In her free time, Marge will be remembered for her efforts in women's rights and racial equality. During the 1970's she was an active member of the Community Bi-racial Counsel, and championed Planned Parenthood. In February of 1989, Marge traveled with Rev. Emily Gibson to Haiti to establish a partnership with the Church of the Ascension in Port-au-Prince and advance the work of the Christ Church Missions Committee. She was also a member of the Clionian Literary Society.
She is survived by three daughters: Anne Woodbury of Portland, OR, Ellen (Brian Wendt) Woodbury of Loveland, CO, and Marty (Ken) Williams of Orange, CT; grandsons: Steven and James Mastanduno of Portland, OR.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 11:00am at Christ Episcopal Church, 33 E. First St., Corning, NY. Burial will take place in the family plot at Hope Annex Cemetery, Corning. Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning has been entrusted with the arrangements.
