Biography

Nellie Ruth Aughenbaugh Stewart, 76, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 25, 2010. Nellie died at home with her husband and daughter at her side following a long battle with heart disease.

Nellie was born in Lumber City, PA, on January 26, 1934, to Curtis and Erie Wisor Aughenbaugh. They predeceased her. Her family moved to Grampian, PA, when a new dam was built that cleared her birth home. Nellie went to Grampian Elementary School and High School in Curwensville, PA.

Nellie was predeceased by two brothers, Curtis and Charles (Butch) Aughenbaugh and a sister, Delores (Dolly) Ferrier. She is survived by her sisters: Hope (John) Bratt of Memphis, NY, Edith (Frank) Fetters of New Millport, PA, and Ferne (David) O'Hara of Chesapeake, VA. She is also survived by her brother, Dwight (Buddy) Aughenbaugh of DuBois, PA. Surviving also are her special cousins, Patricia Aldrich, Gloria Colegrove, Jeffrey Wisor, John Wisor, and Mary Cervoni, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Nellie came to Corning as a teenager to live with her beloved aunt and uncle, Martha and Art Wisor to care for their young son, Johnny, to whom she was devoted. It was while living with Martha that she learned how to be an excellent cook, baker, and homemaker. Nellie met her husband, Cedric, at a round and square dance at the Old Cheese Factory in East Campbell on September 20, 1952. Her uncles were part of the band that performed that evening. Their courtship was short and sweet. They were married on June 20, 1953, at Grace United Methodist Church in Corning.

Their union brought forth a wonderful family of four children: Ruthann Hanlin of Wilkes Barre, PA, Barbara Stewart of Charlotte, NC; and twin sons, Kenneth (Theresa) Stewart of Sante Fe, TX and Kevin Stewart of McDonald, PA; a daughter-in-law, Karen Stewart of Webster, TX.

Nellie was extremely proud of her grandchildren: Jamie and Brooke Hanlin of Charlotte, NC; Courtney and Cameron Barnard of Charlotte, NC; Ashley and KC Stewart of Sante Fe, TX; and Payton Stewart of Webster, TX. She was thrilled to become the great grandmother of Ayden Jacob Sanner, of Charlotte, NC, in August of 2009.

Nellie worked as a teenager at the Stanton Diner and the old Foodmart in Corning. Once her children became older, she worked in the Corning City School District as part of the cafeteria staff. She became the cafeteria manager at Bradford Central School retiring from there in June 1995.

Nellie was active in her hometown of Monterey. She worked as an election inspector for the Town of Orange for 28 years, clerked at the Davis General Store, and was involved in many fund raising activities for the Monterey Volunteer Fire Company and catered many wedding receptions. She was well known for her food and wedding cakes. In addition she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Corning Chapter and the American Legion Robert D. Austin Post in Campbell.

Nellie shared so much love and attention with her children during their years at Bradford Central School. Her children and grandchildren were involved in many academic and sports activities. Her cookies became a tradition at these events. Nellie and Cedric started their love affair on a dance floor and enjoyed dancing their way through 56 years of marriage.

To honor Nellie's wishes there will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held at the Phillips Funeral Home, Corning, at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Chapel Knoll Cemetery in Coopers Plains. Nellie was a member of the Monterey Baptist Church. Her pastor, Rev. Robert Stuart, will officiate at her service.

The Stewart family would especially like to thank the following people for their love and help during these last few months: Connie O'Dell, Pat Aldrich, Delinda Dann, Laurel Antonio, Kim States, and members of her Monterey Baptist Church family. We are extremely grateful for the care given her by the Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care Services including her wonderful nurses: Julie, Judy, and Judy. We would also like to thank the ICU nurses at Robert Packer Hospital, especially Sharlene and Nancy. They became part of her "family". Thank you also to Monterey Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Schuyler County Ambulance, and the ER staffs at Corning and Schuyler Hospitals.

Flowers will be provided by her family. Memorial donations are most welcome in Nellie's memory to any of the previously mentioned organizations as well as the American Heart Association.

Simply said, I loved Nellie! I will miss that wonderful smile and upbeat attitude. Ruth Ann, Barbie, and Cedric will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. They were family to me, and I loved babysitting the girls and enjoying the wonderful baked goods that Nellie always put out for me. God has taken Nellie, and one day we will reunite and most likely share one of her wonderful Christmas cookies over a cup of coffee in Heaven. But don't despair Loved Ones, I am absolutely sure that my Dad is already welcoming her with open arms and making her laugh just as he use to do when she worked in our store in Montery. Always in my thoughts, Betty (Davis) Maxfield

Our hearts are sadden by the loss of Nellie. She was one classy lady and we thought the world of her. We have lived out-of-state for years but always put an order in at Christmas time for her delicious cookies. No matter how hard I tried, I could never duplicate them. Cedric and family - you remain in our thoughts. Nellie is in heaven and she has a friend - my Dad - to welcome here.
