Biography

Lola H. Bennett, age 71, of West 5th Street in Corning died Thursday, February 18, 2010, at home surrounded by her family following a ten year battle with lymphoma.

Lola was born in Corning on February 17, 1939, to Arland and Arvena (Speer) Hitchcock. She had been employed by the City of Corning as an account clerk. Lola loved the beach, babies, grandchildren, long walks, and country music. She had been a Brownie leader and a Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by her two daughters, Linda (Donald) Stewart of Presho and Nancy Thomas of Corning; two sons, James (Susan) Thomas of Dundee and Steven (Darla) Thomas of Caton; one brother, Roger (Barbara) Hitchcock of Corning; stepdaughters: Kathy Bennett of Houston, TX, and Debra (John) Griswold of Windermier, FL; stepson, Bryan (Kim Shaddock) Bennett of Arlington, TX; 18 grandchildren including her granddaughter Mara Thomas who lived with her; several great grandchildren including Jonathon Stone; several nieces and nephews. Lola was predeceased by her brother Harlyn Hitchcock.

Calling hours will be Saturday, February 27th from 1-3 PM at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney Street in Corning where funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM with Rev. Judy White officiating. Lola will be the fifth generation, on both sides of the family, to be buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Caton.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Lymphoma Research Foundation, 115 Broadway, 13th Floor, New York, NY 10006 or to Southern Tier Hospice & Palliative Care, 11751 East Corning Road, Corning, NY 14830.

Our memories of Lola will always be of her smile and laughter. I know of no one that lived her life to the fullest more than Lola. Her positive attitude gave the same to others that knew her. She will truly be missed but not forgotten.
