History

Daniel and Irene Stinson founded Phillips Funeral Home in 1912.  At age 19, Irene, a pioneering woman in the funeral business, became the first woman funeral director in New York State.  Her daughter, Shirley Sutherland, joined her in the business in 1945.  Shirley became a partner in 1958.  Together, Irene & Shirley operated Phillips Funeral Home until Irene's death in 1984.  Shirley continued operating Phillips Funeral Home until 1990, when she sold the business to brothers; David & Jon Carpenter.

Since David and Jon purchased Phillips Funeral Home in 1990, they have completely renovated the interior of the funeral home and added a beautiful arrangement center.  David and Jon purchased addtional property that provides parking for more than 90 cars.  They also added an attractive landscaped fountain meditation park.  David and Jon are committed to continually improving the facilities such that they provide a comfortable, safe and worry free environment.

Present owners, David and Jon Carpenter come from a long family heritage of funeral directors in the city of Corning. Their grandfather, Paul L. Carpenter, founded the Carpenter’s Funeral Home in 1912. David and Jon’s father, Paul Eldred Carpenter, owned and operated Carpenter’s Funeral Home until it was sold in 1975.
